On 27th March, 1916, 9th East Surrey, 72 Brigade, 24th Division moved into the front line trenches in the southern part of the Ypres salient where they remained until 2nd April. The Battalion Diary records that on 31st March, 1916 the enemy artillery was largely inactive but not so their snipers and perhaps it was one of these that accounted for the death of Joseph Gibson who was killed in action on that day. |
